CentOS 7 fails to boot after update

So.. today I did a:

yum upgrade

on my CentOS 7 machine, and it hung at the end of the cleanup.

After a reboot, it failed to start with a screen showing “end trace” similar to:

Message

I found that it would boot, if I scrolled down my grub boot menu list, to two versions previous.

After much google searching, I found this guide:

Re-Install the Kernel

Following the instructions, I removed the newest 2 kernels, leaving the one that worked, and re-installed the latest kernel.

After a reboot, it worked once more.

uname -r
[3.10.0-514.2.2.el7.x86_64]

rpm -qa | grep kernel | sort
[see the 2 newer versions .. .6.2, .10.2]

yum remove kernel-3.10.0-514.6.2.el7.x86_64 kernel-3.10.0-514.10.2.el7.x86_64

rpm -qa | grep kernel | sort
[see the newer versions removed]

yum install kernel-3.10.0-514.10.2.el7.x86_64

rpm -qa | grep kernel | sort
[see the new version installed]
